I heard a lot of disappointment from my friends this week. I read a lot of disappointment on the Twitters this week. I saw a lot of disappointed faces grumbling about the election.
Good change is like good sex…slow, deliberate, and consensual.
Here are the AMAZEBALLS changes that took place this week:
Two states sent the first Native American women to Congress. One state elected it’s first Native American lieutenant governor. San Juan County, Utah elected two Native American men to county council. Lucy McBath, whose son was shot and killed in 2012 won her Congressional bid. El Dorado, Arkansas has it’s first African-American Mayor, Veronica Smith-Creer. Two Muslim women are headed to the Nation’s Capitol. Republican Kristi Noem is South Dakota’s first female governor. Colorado now has a gay governor, while Oregon secured victory for our bisexual governor Kate Brown. Florida elected its first Iranian-American lawmaker to the state legislature and SHE is a badass. Transgender candidates won races in 4 states. Albany, Oregon elected it’s first African-American city council member Alex Johnson II. 19 African-American women ran for judge in Texas and they all won. Andrea Stewart-Cousins in the first African-American woman, and the first woman EVER, to lead a majority legislative conference in New York. Lauren Underwood won her election in Illinois’s 14th House District.
This list is not exhaustive but it is magical. It shows us that the matriarchy is rising. It shows us that change is taking place. It shows us that when we show up and vote the entire trajectory of our nation shifts towards a more just and equitable future.
Negative thoughts are holding our nation back. Let’s release our past and see a future of promise and hope. Release yourself from disappointment and focus on what matters most, a Nation that we can all be proud to call home.
