What does freedom mean to you?

I recently asked this question of my Facebook followers and the answers were as varied as our personalities. Here is some of what they said:

I believe there is a price we pay to live within and benefit from a structured society. For me, freedom is the ability to choose whether or not I live in such a society and if I do, the ability to help decide how that society functions. – Sarah Hadley, Courageous on the Page

The ability to be who I am and not apologize or feel guilty. – Sarah Finger McDonald

My liberty. – Dane Weeks

Bodily autonomy, the ability to pursue a calling / ability to contribute to society as I choose to (work, parenthood, etc.). Legal guardianship of my children. Choices choices choices. The right to own property, travel, vote, and drive. The right to choose my romantic partners, the right to choose no romantic partner. The right to wear or not wear clothing of my choice. Access to healthcare that I can afford easily (paid for in taxes ideally). All basic needs met: food, water, shelter, clothing, clean air. Having a say in how my taxes are spent. Too many of the world’s female population do not have any of these rights. – Thomai Hatsios

Personal space; freedom of movement. Which for me is the best metaphor for freedom to make my own choices, and co-create my own world. – T.M. Baird

How can we say we fight for everyone’s freedom when each of us defines freedom differently? Think about it. Who are we talking about when we make the blanket statement…I fight for your freedom. Whose freedom?

I challenge you to think hard about freedom this weekend. What does it mean? Where does it apply? And how can you take your personal definition of freedom and ask others what freedom means to them?

The only way we come together as a community and stop shaming each other for our choices is to remember one simple little thing…we all have a different definition of what it means to be free.
