Monday Mayhem – Disrupting Christianity

I grew up Mormonish (LDS lite) in Utah. My relationship with God and Christianity was complicated to say the least. As a bisexual (sometimes lesbian, always queer) woman I hated religion and what religion stood for. To me it was hateful and biased. To me it held no space for growth and love. And so I mostly avoided houses of worship.

To be clear I believe in God. I also believe in the divine Goddess, the Universe, and a higher presence much, much bigger than myself. I also believe that a good old fashioned spell will do wonders when you need an extra helping hand.

I have always wanted to disrupt Christianity. I have always wanted to engage in sincere conversation about charity and the social safety net that originated out of religion.

Next week, at the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Corvallis, Oregon I get to start doing both and I am really excited about it. Join me for the 5 weeks if you can. If you can’t they will be video taped and posted online.

Advocacy in whatever form it takes will never be done perfectly for everyone BUT…

If we are being kind, loving and focused. If we are being passionate, fierce and graceful. If we are working to dismantle systems of oppression in all their forms then we are doing Gods work…we are doing the work of the resistance.

Activism is not always a protest  Information is the key to making change  Creating ancillary support is critical to the success of a movement

Disrupt what you expect from religion. Make it your own. Challenge what you think you know about the safety net, about charity, about the Bible. By challenging what we think we know, we can make change in so many different ways in our communities.

It’s Monday, light it up y’all, Dr. Melissa Bird

P.S. If you love this fierce brand of activism and want some in your own life. You can hire me to coach your words and your voice into fierce, passionate reality! Together we will engage in some reckless fun while discovering what flips your skirt so that you can make a difference in your life and community.
